Pillar Guide ┬╖ Ayurveda
An honest, responsible guide to India's 3,000-year-old wellness system тАФ what it is, what it may support, what to expect, and how to choose a suitable retreat.
The basics
Ayurveda тАФ from Sanskrit Ayus (life) and Veda (knowledge) тАФ is India's classical traditional health system with a long documented history.
Its central principle is that wellbeing includes body, mind, routine, food, rest and constitution together. Two people with similar concerns may receive different recommendations based on their history and constitution.
A qualified Ayurvedic physician holds a BAMS degree (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery). They may assess through pulse reading (Nadi Pariksha), physical observation, case history, diet and lifestyle patterns before recommending suitable therapies.
What many travellers experience as "Ayurveda" in a hotel spa is only one small expression of the system. A serious retreat considers consultation, food, rest, herbal preparations where suitable, and sometimes the intensive procedures of Panchakarma.
A well-planned stay can support sleep, routine, digestion, rest and steadier habits, but outcomes vary by person and should not be treated as a fixed medical result.
Why Kerala specifically?
Kerala's plant biodiversity, monsoon traditions, practitioner networks and Ayurveda retreat infrastructure make it one of the world's best-known regions for classical Ayurveda.
