Pillar Guide · Panchakarma
A complete guide to one of Ayurveda's most intensive wellness protocols — what it is, how the three phases work, what each procedure does, and what to expect.
The definition
Pancha means five. Karma means actions. Panchakarma is the five-procedure detoxification and rejuvenation system within Ayurveda — one of its most intensive practitioner-guided branches.
The classical principle is that imbalance can build through Ama, often translated as unprocessed metabolic waste. Panchakarma is planned to support elimination, rest and routine reset rather than promise a cure for symptoms.
This is not a massage sequence. It is a structured programme that requires practitioner review, sequential preparation, and post-programme recovery guidance. Diet, sleep, activity, and mental input are all considered.

The protocol
Many resorts offer "Panchakarma" that is only the middle phase. A more responsible programme explains preparation, active procedures and recovery clearly before you commit.
Preparation · Days 1–5
The body is prepared before main treatments. This phase uses internal oleation where suitable and external oil therapies, with the sequence adjusted by the practitioner.
Key treatments
Main treatments · Days 5–18
The five main elimination procedures, prescribed based on your dominant dosha, condition, and the findings from your initial doctor consultation. Most programmes use Virechana and Basti as the primary procedures. The exact sequence is personalised.
Key treatments
Recovery · Days 18–21+
Post-treatment rehabilitation is as important as the treatment itself. The digestive fire (Agni) has been reset; the body is in a sensitive, receptive state. Graduated diet, lifestyle guidelines, and specific yoga/pranayama are prescribed. Skipping this phase wastes the preceding work.

Therapeutic Emesis · Kapha dosha
A carefully supervised classical procedure using herbal preparations. It may be considered for Kapha-dominant patterns after practitioner review. Rarely recommended; only for guests assessed as suitable.
